The Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay (SRI@JB) has been awarded $3.6 million from the Department of the Interior’s Hurricane Sandy Mitigation Funding to support projects that will help advance understanding of resilience in urban coastal ecosystems with a focus on Jamaica Bay, which is a unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. Jamaica Bay provides significant habitat for fish and wildlife, resources for recreation and health, and is critical to the city’s efforts to address climate change. Research projects will be conducted along several high priority focus areas, including climate change and resilient ecosystems; water quality; restoration science; and storm damage reduction.
