The Institute welcomes Fulbright Visiting Scholar Professor Marcelo de Andrade Romero from the University of São Paulo (Brazil).
The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program provides grants to approximately 850 foreign scholars from over 100 countries to conduct post-doctoral research at U.S. institutions from an academic semester to a full academic year.
Dr. Romero will be working at the Science and Resilience Institute investigating New York City’s approach to urban resilience, comparing it with the development of the City of São Paulo Sustainable Master Plan – SP 2040. As São Paulo and New York City are ‘mega cities; and face the same problems, Dr. Romero hopes to learn from the experiences, challenges, plans, and actions adopted by New York City.
Dr. Romero’s interests lie in sustainable architecture, urban sustainable development, and energy efficiency. He is currently the Provost of Culture and Extension and the Superintendent of Environment and Management at the University of São Paulo. Marcelo has over 22 years working on sustainable development in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, El Salvador, United States, Mexico, England, Scotland, Portugal, Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, Russia, South Africa, Australia and China. He coordinates an international network called Urban Sustainable Development (WC2), promoting dialogue with public and private sector entities in different countries from North, Central and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa.
The Institute and its partners are excited to work with him and we hope to learn from each other about building a resilient city.
