Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay: Coordination of DOI and NPS Sandy Resilience Projects
William Solecki, Hunter College, CUNY

The occurrence of Hurricane Sandy in late October 2012 caused a stepwise change in the ecological basis of several of the NPS holdings in the northeast region of the US, specifically Gateway National Recreation Area. The NPS has entered into a General Management Agreement with the City of New York and the City University of New York to develop the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay for the purposes of engaging in research and education activities to understand and contribute to the understanding of resilience in urban ecosystems. This Task Agreement involves providing coordination among studies to be supported by the NPS in furtherance of the goals of the Institute.

Funding: Department of Interior, National Park Service
Project Period: November 2014 – October 2016
